Today, the paper industry is facing major challenges and structural transformations: companies that fail to adapt to this rapidly evolving industrial environment risk losing competitiveness. Achieving greater energy efficiency, high productivity and improved runnability has become essential for all producers, from multinational groups to family-owned paper mills.
Despite its international growth, MEVAS firmly believes that strong local roots provide the best foundation for future success. For this reason, the company is committed to supplying high-tech, innovative solutions to the mills operating in the Tissue Valley.
Case study

Mevas recently completed a major rebuild aimed at significantly optimizing the entire drying process of an important customer by combining two of its most advanced patented technologies.
1. Stratoflame: With more than 40 installations worldwide, Mevas Stratoflame is a burner specifically developed to meet the paper industry’s requirements in terms of performance, energy savings and emissions.
Its distinctive construction geometry allows the system to operate with minimal excess combustion air, resulting in an immediate reduction in gas consumption.
2. Steam Pack: Mevas Steam Pack is an innovative steam generator that produces high-quality saturated steam for the Yankee by recovering heat from exhaust gases. By exploiting energy that would otherwise be wasted, the system generates high-pressure saturated steam for the process, reducing both boiler steam demand and gas consumption.
- Existing situation: old 5 MW burner; inadequate safety and reliability of the gas train and control systems; high CO and NOx emissions; limited steam production from exhaust gases; reduced drying-process performance and energy efficiency.
Project goals: improve air mixing and achieve a more uniform downstream temperature distribution; increase equipment safety and drying performance; reduce CO and NOx emissions; lower the carbon footprint and gain access to green incentives; substantially reduce specific production costs. The Mevas solution included the turnkey supply of a complete 6 MW Stratoflame burner and the installation of the Steam Pack system. - Results: the installation delivered significant results in terms of energy savings and the reduction of specific production costs.

STRATOFLAME
- Burner emissions (CO and NOx) dropped down to 50 mg/Nm3 @ 17%O2.
- Fuel consumption fell by more than 7%, saving over 200.000 Nm3/h of fuel per year.
STEAM PACK
- Steam generation from exhaust gases increased from 600 to 1.400 kg/h with no unplanned downtime. This resulted in energy savings of more than 430 kW compared with the previous system.
Conclusion

The successful installation delivered an outstanding return on investment, confirming the value of the customer’s forward-looking approach. Other important achievements included a reduction in CO₂ emissions, essential for meeting sustainability targets, as well as access to White Certificates and other green incentives.
These results were made possible by thorough preliminary technical analyses and continuous dialogue with the customer.
Mevas maintains a strong connection with its territory, applying its expertise and commitment to support local partners and customers and help them become progressively more competitive and efficient.
At the same time, the company continues to draw knowledge and experience from Lucca’s papermaking tradition, contributing to the international development and dissemination of this centuries-old industrial heritage.
