GO2Roll: unlocking the full potential of tissue converting lines

Despite decades of progress in automation, many tissue converting lines still fall short of reaching their full potential. Audits conducted on modern lines have shown that expected productivity levels - such as 90% efficiency and 20-25 tons per 8-hour shift - are often missed by a wide margin, with actual figures averaging 60-65% efficiency at best.

To address this gap, BW Converting developed GO2Roll, a digital solution later demonstrated in full operation during the Paragon Open House in Green Bay in July. The system improves performance, stability and usability by introducing smart automation that supports and complements operator expertise.

GO2Roll has been developed to help tissue producers make better use of their converting assets, especially in environments where production still relies heavily on real-time operator decisions. Rather than adding complexity, it introduces a structured layer of intelligent functions that monitor machine behavior, detect deviations and guide or apply corrective actions in real time.

“Today’s converting lines generate an enormous amount of data,” explains Stefano Spinelli, Product Lifecycle Management Director at BW Converting. “GO2Roll helps transform that data into actionable insights, supporting the operator and making production more stable, even under variable conditions or with less experienced personnel.”

GO2Roll’s features address the most common sources of micro stops, waste and instability. The system includes continuous monitoring of critical axes such as load cells and rider rolls; web tension health that supervises the tension settings of different paper types and product formats; and log stability detection, which automatically adjusts speed to avoid web breaks and quality loss. Inline measurement of firmness and diameter for each log helps prevent off-spec products, improve winding control and reduce waste.

Additionally, auto-resume and autorestart functions reduce downtime after splices or short stops, with settings optimized for quick recovery.

In real-world installations, GO2Roll has helped raise line efficiency from 65% to 83% and shift output from 16.7 to 20.9 tons, while reducing operator workload by up to 30%. These results are achieved not by increasing mechanical speed but by improving process consistency, limiting unnecessary slowdowns and supporting the operator during unexpected conditions.

In addition to productivity improvements, GO2Roll contributes to better energy use and reduced material waste. The system supports sustainability goals by ensuring more stable production and minimizing scrap due to quality variations or unstable winding.

Designed for integration on both new and existing PCMC FORTE and PARAGON lines, GO2Roll is available either as a one-time purchase or as a subscription-based solution. With the subscription model, customers gain access to all new features and improvements released on an annual basis.

BW Converting’s roadmap includes the expansion of the GO2 platform to other converting applications such as folding, personal care and packaging, applying the same principles of real-time feedback, intelligent control and simplified daily management.

As part of this vision, GO2Roll becomes a reference point for smarter production days, helping operators and production managers achieve consistent performance, shift after shift.
